I suspect there were some elder types who were involved in the decision who raised questions about his judgment. It would be within Political Science, but it would be within a wider circle. I can remember these things because they were the people who were deciding the verdict on me, as well–and of course President Baxter. Although Williams didn’t have the publication demands then that it has now, there was the expectation that there be evidence of creative scholarship. Publish or perish, yes. Bob, of course I wasn’t privy to any of this, but the teaching record was very strong. Bob was attracting the brightest students around who were not going to be fooled by a conjurer.
