In drama, they say stress reveals character. In fact, it’s an underpinning of drama. I’m trying to remember the context of this, but maybe somebody had been abroad and came back and was discussing it and Gaudino said, “And when did you first learn to hate them?” And that was a stunning question. Because all [the man] talked about was how beautiful the people were and the culture and, you know, their knits and their wrappings and their straw baskets or whatever it was. “When did I hate them?” When did those people just profoundly irritate the hell out of me and bother me to the point where I was just repulsed by their behavior in a way? That was a classic Gaudino question.
