Well, he announced that he was ill and basically throughout the question was how could he use it as an educational device? He had a group of people over and sort of announced it. I just remember being stunned that he was obviously a teacher to his core, that he would seek to give meaning and significance to what must have been a shattering revelation to be told that you had a neurological disease that was probably terminal. For me that was sort of striking about it was my father was terminally ill at that point as well and Gaudino’s reaction to his illness was 180 degrees different than my father’s had been to his, which was basically to try to protect everyone from any knowledge of it and to never mention it or discuss it. You know, that one memory of that one night may actually be the thing that will stay with me into deep old age when perhaps I get one of those diagnoses.
