I was at his house one night, we were having cider and donuts, and I said to him, “Did you ever regret not having children and your own family?” And he looked at me with a twinkle in his eye and said, “All my students are my children.” It would have been great to follow up with a lot more questions, like he would have, but I certainly didn’t want to put him on the spot or make him feel uncomfortable. As a student I didn’t think it was my place.
