“He really understood me better than I realized. My father had died that year and he encouraged me to leave New York after I had finished my degree and come down to Washington. He helped me find a place. It was during the [Eisenhower-Stevenson presidential] campaign years ago. He said, “You should go in, see if you can get a job.” I did, easily. He found me a place to live which was a boarding house in Washington. It was a bed and breakfast but it was really a boarding house filled with young people and Bob found it and helped me move. He had left Chicago to–I think that was his only job–at Williams College.
