Oh, Strauss was a fabulous teacher. I took his class, actually audited, on Machiavelli, on the Discourses, and we went paragraph by paragraph through it. Clark Bouton once said to me, “You’re lucky you didn’t take The Prince. It’s only 95 pages. We went sentence by sentence.” No, Strauss was a fabulous teacher. You didn’t have to agree with him.

I did not get that, the conservatism. We just worked on Machiavelli.
