“I got one of these fellowships to work in Washington the summer between junior and senior year because I’d done some work at the Roper Public Opinion Center which was at Williams at the time. Phil Hastings, who ran that, who was on the political science faculty, got me a job–not an internship–a job at USIA, and I had to get a clearance. And so the FBI sent a guy up on campus with a trench coat and a fedora. Of course, he looked completely foolish. Fifteen minutes after he got on campus, everybody knew he was there. And he went to see Gaudino and Gaudino said to him, “You mean Mr. Linsky is going to be able to have access to classified information this summer?” The guy said, “Yes.” He said, “Oh, that’s wonderful because he tells me everything.”
