“I guess my first encounter was a non-encounter. When they had the introductory session, I did not go. But two of my three roommates did, Bud Kaufman and Steve Kendrick, and they came back just sort of converted if you will. And that’s what sort of drew me in. I think I remember an interview. Gaudino always talked about me as sort of from a family from Virginia. My father was a banker for 40 years and I think he saw me in a way as a laboratory rat, if you will. This is a person who has a certain profile. And when he is in India he will be confronted with who he is. I didn’t know how provincial my upbringing was. I had never been out of the state other than to look at colleges. I always felt he was two steps ahead of me.
