In the fall of that year, I remember having to begin our series of shots. I remember that suddenly reminded me this was an intimidating place we were going to, you’re going to get all these shots on these dates, like seven major diseases. The plague sounds pretty spooky. Each was like three shots, so it was like 14 in all.

The spring semester in India was pass/fail. And I remember knowing that no entire semester ever in the history of the college had been pass/fail and to me that said a lot because I knew enough about the kind of institution that was a weird, very exceptional thing. I remember at the time, “How did they get that approved?”
